1. Data Controller

RIDE TETHER LIMITED (Company Number: 16740228) is the data controller responsible for your personal data when you use the Tether mobile application (“App”).

We comply with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

2. Personal Data We Collect

2.1 Account Information

  • Username
  • Email address
  • Password (stored in encrypted/hashed form)
  • Profile photo (if uploaded)
  • Motorcycle name (if provided)

2.2 Location Data

  • Real-time geographic location when you join or create a ride
  • Background location data only while a ride is active (if enabled on your device)
  • Route and navigation data
  • Ride history

Location data is collected only when the feature is activated and required permissions are granted. We do not store location data indefinitely; location data and ride records are retained only for as long as needed to provide the service, and can be removed when you delete your account.

2.3 User-Generated Content

  • Ride start and destination details
  • Messages sent via in-app chat
  • Profile information
  • Photos (when this feature becomes available)

2.4 Technical and Usage Data

  • Device type and operating system
  • IP address
  • App version
  • Crash reports and diagnostics
  • Usage analytics

3. How We Use Your Data

  • Provide real-time group navigation
  • Display rider locations and ETAs
  • Enable private and public groups
  • Facilitate in-app chat
  • Improve performance, reliability and security
  • Prevent fraud and misuse
  • Communicate important service updates

If premium subscription features are introduced in the future, we may also process data to manage subscription access.

4. Legal Basis for Processing

  • Contract: to provide the App and its group ride features
  • Consent: for location permissions and background tracking
  • Legitimate interests: to improve the service and protect users
  • Legal obligation: where required by law

You can withdraw consent for location access in your device settings at any time.

5. Group Privacy and Location Visibility

Tether supports private and public ride groups. Your live location is visible only to members of the group you join. You can leave a ride at any time.

We do not sell your personal data or location data.

6. Data Sharing and Processors

We use trusted third-party providers to operate the App and website, including Google Maps API, Firebase, Apple App Store / Google Play (where applicable), and Netlify. Some providers may process data outside the UK. Where this occurs, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.

We may transition mapping providers (for example, Mapbox) in the future.

7. Data Retention

We retain personal data only for as long as necessary to provide the service, maintain ride history (where you choose to keep it), and comply with legal obligations. We do not keep location data indefinitely. If you delete your account, we will delete or anonymise your personal data unless we are legally required to retain certain information.

8. Account Deletion

You may delete your account within the App. Deleting your account will remove your account details from our systems (including Firebase). If you cannot access the in-app deletion feature, you can request deletion by emailing jay@ridetether.com.

9. Your Rights

You have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict processing, object, and request portability of your data. You may also lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

10. Children’s Privacy

Tether is intended for users aged 16 and over. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 16. If we become aware that we have collected such data, we will take steps to delete it.

11. App Store and Google Play Compliance

This Privacy Policy is provided to meet platform requirements for Apple App Store and Google Play. We explain what data we collect, why we collect it, how it is used, and the choices you have.

We do not sell personal data. Location sharing is used to provide group ride functionality and is visible only to the ride group you join (public or private). Background location is used only while a ride is active, where you have enabled it on your device.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Updates will be posted on this page and, where appropriate, within the App.
